Agency Description: Bolder Options is a transformational mentoring program for at-promise youth ages 10-14 in the Twin Cities and Rochester. Mentor pairs meet every week for at least one year working towards physical health, academic success, and social/emotional health goals. Last year, 100% of graduating pairs elected to continue their relationship post-graduation, and 90% of youth planned to go to college after high school. Our goal is to ensure that the promise of youth in our community is realized, regardless of their life circumstances. We have a team of 15 FT and PT staff who are passionate about serving youth and families. We live by values that include having fun, living a healthy/active life, and maintaining work/life balance.

Position Description: The Director of Development and Communications oversees all aspects of fundraising including special events, individual giving, institutional giving, and marketing/ communications. This position has four direct reports and supervises the work of event and grant writing consultants. With a strong development team in place, a diverse revenue base, a compelling case for support, and a 5-year trend of increasing revenue, Bolder Options is looking for someone who can build on this momentum to take us to the next level.

Responsibilities:

Planning/Supervision:

  • Supervise four development team staff including two Development Associates, a Corporate Partnership Mgr, and a Marketing Specialist as well as contract event and grant consultants

  • Create an annual development plan for securing support from institutional donors, individuals, special events and other sources of contributed revenue and report on progress

Individual Donors:

  • Work with President to identify top donors and strategies to cultivate/solicit/steward

  • Manage a portfolio of mid-level donors

  • Take the lead on sending two direct mail appeals per year and a series of email appeals

  • Coordinate thank you calls to donors throughout the year

  • Promote charitable planned giving utilizing Crescendo software

  • Plan and promote Give to the Max Day

  • Ensure that all donations are recorded in CRM and acknowledged in a timely manner

Institutional Giving:

  • Develop and maintain relationships with institutional donors

  • Maintain a calendar of grant prospects with deadlines and due dates for reports

  • Work in collaboration with program staff and grant consultant to prepare grant proposals/reports and ensure compliance

  • Maintain up-to-date digital files and ensure all grants are recorded and acknowledged

 

Special Events:

  • Work with event consultants to plan two major fundraising events (golf and gala)

  • Assist staff in planning Rochester Tailgate event

  • Take the lead on soliciting event sponsorships

  • Work with development team to plan quarterly donor cultivation (non-ask) events

 

Marketing/Communications:

  • Work with Marketing Specialist to create print and digital materials promoting events and to keep website content updated

  • Oversee creation of annual report and other marketing materials for folder

  • Work with Social Media Strategist to plan increase presence on multiple platforms

  • Plan several non-ask email communications throughout the year

 

Other:

  • Assist finance department in creating and tracking progress towards revenue goals

  • Staff Marketing/Development committee and attend Board meetings

  • Represent Bolder Options within community and statewide groups, alliances, associations, and boards/committees, as appropriate

Qualifications/Competencies:

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred, but not required

  • 5+ years fundraising experience, 2+ years management experience

  • Demonstrated experience managing an individual donor program

  • track record of success in reaching and exceeding fundraising goals

  • Familiarity with marketing/communication as it relates to fundraising communications

  • The ability to connect with unfamiliar people and to develop and nurture new relationships

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and the basics of utilizing a CRM or fundraising software

  • Excellent organizational, communication, time-management, and prioritization skills

  • Self-motivated, detail-oriented

Physical Demands: Remaining in a stationary position, often standing or sitting in front of a computer for prolonged periods. Frequent communication by phone, email, virtual meetings, and in-person with team members. Access to a reliable transportation for donor and other meetings. Salary/Benefits: Full-time exempt position, flexible work schedule including ability to work from home some of the time, with occasional weekend and evening hours for events. Benefits include medical and dental insurance, vision insurance, life insurance, short and long-term disability insurance, 3-4 weeks of PTO plus 13 paid holidays, and a 401(k) plan with a match. Salary range based on key qualifications: $75,000 – $95,000
